the Rising Sun, geisha, samurai. Land of yakitori and divine whiskeys.
The only drawback: it’s really really far away.
Torii, fortunately, is near, and dedicated to the twin pleasures of grilled skewers and single-malt whiskey. The two-story restaurant and bar in Damansara Heights’ Batai Village has been open since January 2015, and is roughly twice the size of the original location in TTDI. The lighting fixtures are large, funky affairs; the enlarged grill surface-inspired wall features are playfully distinctive.
We imagine the ideal dining experience will go something like this:
You check the board for specials – wonderful, sashimi night. You order the ohtoro, and the uni, naturally. You add the ever-popular Wings, the Wagyu Seven, and a few more of the 42 skewers on offer.
All this under the watchful gaze of the Japanese warrior masks painted on the walls. Order more, their angry eye sockets seem to say. So you add the Avocado De La Mer and the Bonded Unagi & Fois Gras.
Then you go upstairs, for whiskey. Torii’s owners are obviously true enthusiasts. You know this because of the 25-year Yamazaki and the 30-year Hibiki. And definitely because of the Karuizawa, which won a bunch of awards but is no longer in production.
That’s the one.
It’s like we know you.

The Batai location of Torii has two floors. The ground level is exclusively for food, and is a no-smoking area. Upstairs is the bar, where you can smoke. There's also a private room, if you're in the market for one.
One of the rare single-malt whiskeys, from one of the largest selections in the city.
